Abigail grabbed hold of the screaming Madelyn, prying her arms away from me, and in the same moment, Bianca rushed past and struck Talos with her shoulder. The burly Asterion planted his feet, and should have brought the smaller woman to a halt, but Bianca’s momentum was as much magic as muscle. She hefted the much larger bullman up off his hooves, and with a cry of rage, slammed him down onto his back.

“Alex! Alex, help!” Madelyn cried. She sounded hysterical, but given what was happening to her, I couldn’t blame her.

Abigail wrestled her arms behind her, cursing in German. “The coral!”

I stepped around Madelyn’s kicking legs and got in close, digging the coral into the burqshackle on her scalp. It released her, and I pulled it off with a wet squelch. There was a prominent sunburst pattern of teeth marks in her skin, with hints of blue ink-like venom staining them.

Madelyn’s limbs jerked and spasmed, and she flexed her whole body. “Holy shit! What the fuck!” She threw her arms around me with a sobbing shout. “I couldn’t control my body!”

I glared up at Gerasimos, who floated high above the madness, probably grinning with whatever passed for his mouth. “Ich, can you get him?”

Ichiro gave his neck a crack and fired, his silenced pistol letting out a trio of rapid claps. Gerasimos writhed in the air, and any of the infected Gorgonans not fighting with someone turned towards us and rushed the stage.

That included the stumpy satyr auctioneer, who tackled my waist and knocked me off my feet. The moon coral bounced out of my reach as the satyr crawled up towards my face and landed a headbutt that had me seeing stars, despite having a pretty granite jaw, myself.

In my dizziness, I made out the shapes of my friends fighting against incoming hordes of minotaurs, satyrs, and others. They fought like hell, making up for their lack of numbers by being much more coordinated and agile than the burqshackled, twitchy puppets.

‘Hey, Alex. Wanna see something cool?’ Gerasimos cackled.

The auctioneer opened his mouth, and his eyes widened with fear. The burqshackle clinging to his body squirmed up and into his mouth. The choking sounds in his throat made me shudder.

He gagged, then vomited, but the burqshackle he’d swallowed held it back. As his neck bulged I saw a black, tarry substance sizzle out of his mouth, and moved my head aside to miss being burned by it.

The auctioneer’s body deflated, like someone was squeezing him dry. His eyes rolled back into his head, and a second later an ooze-covered something slithered out of his mouth, longer than his tongue. It writhed in the air and I saw a pair of scissor-like mandibles extend from its ‘head’ as it turned towards me.

It looked like a cross between a centipede, a bobbit worm, and all of my worst nightmares. With a hiss, it coiled back into the auctioneer’s mouth, who seemed to turn back to ‘normal’, but the look in his
